Dear Proctor Penguins and Families,

It was wonderful seeing so many of you at Open House last week. We love having the chance to open our doors, both literally and figuratively, to give families a window into the learning and joy that we get to experience each day.

We are now settling into strong learning routines and habits, and it is exciting to see students already diving into new challenges. This year, we adopted a new core math curriculum, Eureka Math², which takes a story-based approach to building mathematical understanding across the grades. You can find more details in the attachment or in the section below.

And do not forget, our Instagram page is updated regularly with snapshots of our days at school. We hope you will take a look and celebrate the learning with us.

Thank you for taking the time to read our weekly newsletter.

This weekly newsletter will outline the following updates:
  • Save the Date
  • Safety/ Arrival Reminders
  • Math and ELA Curriculum Overview
  • Picture Day
  • NEF Applefest Information
  • Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month
  • PTO Updates

Respectfully,

Stacy Mahoney and the Proctor Team

Arrival/ Safety Reminder

Last week, we reminded families not to use the lower wing parking lot for drop-off, and we are so grateful for your partnership in keeping that area clear and safe.

This week, we ask that parents/caregivers who walk their children to the front of the building say goodbye outside. For safety reasons, all visitors must check in at the Main Office from the hours of 8:10 AM- 3:05 PM. Please do not walk students into the building or around to recess. Our staff on morning duty will happily ensure every child gets where they need to be safely.

We know goodbyes can sometimes feel hard, especially for our youngest learners, but please know that students typically settle in within minutes once inside. Thank you for helping us keep arrival safe and smooth. If you think your child is requiring extra help in the morning please reach out to your child's teacher so we can support as needed.

Fall 2025 Curriculum Overview: K–5 Math & Literacy

Eureka Math²: A Story of Units
This fall, we are excited to launch Eureka Math² across K–5. Built on the Story of Units, the program teaches math as a connected journey rather than isolated skills. Each unit builds upon the last, helping students see how math fits together and apply it in meaningful ways.
  • Kindergarten: Build number sense through counting, shapes, and early addition/subtraction.
  • Grade 1: Develop fluency with addition/subtraction within 20 and build understanding of place value (tens and ones).
  • Grade 2: Extend place value to 1,000, apply addition/subtraction to real-life problems, and explore early multiplication.
  • Grade 3: Major shift into multiplication/division, fractions, area, and multi-digit problem solving.
  • Grade 4: Deepen multiplication/division, add/subtract fractions with like denominators, and work with decimals, angles, and measurement.
  • Grade 5: Solidify fluency with all operations, multiply/divide fractions, explore volume, and use the coordinate plane.
This sequence ensures that by the end of elementary school, students have a strong foundation to enter middle school confident in math reasoning and problem-solving.

ST Math: Visual Math Learning
Alongside Eureka Math², students will use ST Math, a digital program led by Jiji the Penguin. ST Math teaches concepts visually, removing language barriers and making math accessible to all learners. By solving puzzles, students strengthen problem-solving, pattern recognition, and conceptual understanding.

English Language Arts & Literacy
Our literacy block (K–5) weaves together
Foundational Skills, Complex Text, Writing, and Oral Language to create strong, fluent readers and writers.
  • Foundational Skills: Students build phonological awareness, decoding, phonics, and spelling skills with research-based resources such as Heggerty, Lively Letters, Project Read, and Phoneme-Grapheme Mapping (grades 4–5).
  • Complex Text, Writing, & Oral Language: Using Wit & Wisdom, students study rich literature, nonfiction, art, historical speeches, and multimedia sources. Lessons emphasize knowledge-building, deep reading, and academic discourse through integrated reading, speaking, listening, and writing.
Family Literacy Resources
We encourage families to explore these free tools:
Together, Eureka Math², ST Math, and Wit & Wisdom provide our students with a coherent, rigorous, and engaging foundation in math and literacy. These programs are designed to support all learners, foster a love of learning, and prepare students for success in middle school and beyond.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

From September 15 to October 15, we join communities across the country in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. This is a time to recognize and honor the rich cultures, traditions, histories, and contributions of people whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

At Proctor, we are committed to continuing to build a school community where every child feels seen, valued, and celebrated. Over the next month, students will have opportunities to explore stories, music, art, and history that highlight Hispanic and Latinx voices.

If your family has traditions or experiences you would like to share with our school community, we would love to hear from you. Please reach out and let us know how we can celebrate together.

We invite families to join us in honoring this month at home too. This can be done through books, conversations, or by sharing your own traditions with your children. Together, we can help our students build understanding, pride, and connection.
